I recently read an article in The Guardian titled “Strong v swole: the surprising truth about building muscle.”
The gist? You can’t judge a book by its cover. Just because someone has ripped arms and abs doesn’t mean they’re stronger than someone whose muscles aren’t as visually obvious. And it completely reinforced my belief that a workout doesn’t need to leave you crippling sore to be “worth it.”
The same lesson applies to business.
If you walk around the Central Park neighborhood or scroll through social media, you’ll see a lot of entrepreneurs hustling hard. Packed calendars, big revenue months, and impressive online updates make for a glossy picture. But how often do we pause to ask: Are they building something sustainable, or just holding it together with caffeine and sheer willpower?
Real business strength isn’t about looking busy. It’s about working smarter, not just harder, and building systems that support long-term growth. It’s strategic. Intentional. Sustainable.
Coach’s Cues for Building Strength
- Prioritize capacity over busyness:
- Are your systems, time, and energy giving you breathing room, or just more strain?
- In our community, many local entrepreneurs juggle kids’ schedules, school obligations, and networking – strength comes from knowing where to focus.
- Program your time like a workout:
- Rotate your focus, block strategic work, and schedule recovery.
- Just like training different muscle groups, overloading yourself every day leads to burnout, not growth.
- Delegate and outsource wisely:
- You can’t do every “squat” yourself (sorry!).
- Hire or delegate tasks that drain your energy so you can focus on what actually strengthens your business.
- Local resources, like neighborhood bookkeeping or content support, make this easier for business owners balancing community and client work.
Strong businesses thrive when entrepreneurs know where to invest energy – and where to bring in help.
