Enjoying Mud Season in the Mountains

If you’ve spent some significant time in the mountains, you’ve probably heard of Mud Season. Mud Season is a time when the locals take a break to thaw out at a beach. Some restaurants shut down for deep cleaning, Spring skiing comes to a close, and the trails are usually too muddy to use as we see a couple of late season snow storms.

While the trails are muddy, and the sun is out, we all must remember proper trail etiquette to make sure the trails are healthy and can be used all summer long. Trails are not closed during this time. If you choose to recreate outside, be smart, follow the “muddy meter” at the trailhead, and always stay on the trail, even if there is a puddle. Try to choose lower elevation hikes that receive a lot of sun. Leave in the morning when the ground is more firm. If you run into a long muddy section, trudging through can do a lot of harm.  Consider turning around. Breckenridge Open Space is working hard on creating ways to educate outdoor trail users. Find out how here: https://www.summitdaily.com/news/despite-crowds-summit-county-trails-provide-opportunity-for-enhanced-outdoor-experiences/.

Mud season can still be a great time to visit the mountains and avoid the crazy crowds of Summer. Some activities to enjoy are:

  • Eat! The restaurants that are open, will welcome you with open arms and great food. The Summit Daily newspaper should come out with a list of open restaurants/ hours of operation soon.
  • Brewery Tour: Colorado is known for craft beer, and Summit County is no exception.
  • Shopping. Shops usually have some end of season sales!
  • Hike. As stated above, be aware and smart to protect what we all love.
  • Bike. Road biking is ready to go for the most part. Try biking around lake Dillon.
  • Fly Fishing: Check out some local shops to rent gear or even go on a guided day of fishing.
  • Escape Rooms: The popularity of escape rooms has come to Summit County, there are many different ones to try.
