It’s been almost 14 years since I started this blog! I recently went back and looked at some of my early posts and was happily surprised to find that some of them feel just as relevant now as they did then. I’ll be reposting some with updates when there’s one that feels right!

I was reminded of this post, which originally appeared on May 10, 2013 (I’ve updated it a little here), because a colleague of mine went for a bike ride at the Refuge recently with her husband and young son. If you aren’t familiar with the area, it’s a 15,000 acre site that provides refuge for wildlife including bison and black-footed ferrets. She told me that it was the perfect place for little kids to ride—mostly flat, but with a few hills here and there, and bridges that her son was excited to ride across. And because there is so much open space and nice wide trails, kids can really go for it without worrying about cars or even many other people or bikes! She also took some photos and the late-fall afternoon light is spectacular. If we catch a few more moderately warm weekend days, throw your bikes on the car and check it out!

I recently had a chance to bike in the Rocky Mountain Arsenal Refuge and it was a great ride! Once you’re in the refuge, there is virtually no traffic or people. It’s a peaceful, flat ride and you’ll likely even see some deer along the way. Once you get into the wooded area near the lakes, it feels like you’re way out in the country even though your just minutes from home in Central Park.

The refuge is open from sunrise to sunset in fall, winter, and spring. From May 1 to August 1, the hours are sunrise to 8:00 pm.

Enjoy the ride!
