New Bike Camp Rolls into Stapleton
When I heard about a new camp called Pedalheads that would be held at Denver Discovery School in Stapleton, I knew it would be perfect for my two boys even though they couldn’t be more different.
My 8 year old is my cautious guy who would rather spend his days inside building Legos and drawing over riding his bike. He still has training wheels and is wary of taking them off lest he fall. My 4 year old constantly wants to be outside and perfected his strider bike when he was 2. He’s super close to riding a bike without training wheels but I just can’t seem to close the deal on my own.
Pedalheads has camps for beginning bikers all the way through advanced bikers and start with kids as young as 3. The camps emphasize skill building through a fun and entertaining approach in addition to teaching about bike safety.
The camp averages more than a 90 percent success rate getting a kid riding on two wheels after a week of camp. If your biker is already comfortable riding, there are more advanced camps that teach things like hand signals and rules of the road, and help campers increase their stamina for long rides.
“Kids can expect a fun summer program that’s educationally based and focused on teaching skills while combining safety knowledge. For level 1 campers, we have a lot of games that involve visuals like “Under the Sea” and “Animal Safari,” where kids either go in their “submarine” or “jeep” to visit the different animals. We have Olaf’s nose, where kids need to steer their bike to knock off his nose,” says Ben Oryall, Manager of Regional Expansion at Pedalheads.
He adds, “For levels 2 through 4, we have games like “How to Train your Dragon” which is basically a large obstacle course and “Newspaper Delivery,” which is when kids ride, they hold a newspaper and have to drop it off at the houses (practice riding with one hand).”
Pedalheads is headquartered in Vancouver, BC, but began entering the U.S. market in the past few years with other locations in Seattle and Chicago. In addition to Stapleton, Pedalheads will host weekly camps in Wash Park and the Tech Center from June 5 through Aug. 4. Half day and full day options are available, in addition to before and after care for full day campers.
And in case you were wondering, all team leaders and site instructors receive background checks and extensive training before camp begins.
Ben says there are still plenty of openings for parents who want to sign their young biker up, and registrations are accepted until the day before each camp week begins. Prices are $109 per week for an hour long 3 year old program, $219 for half-day camp (morning or afternoon) and $409 per week for full day camp.
