A Thanksgiving Turkey Trot for a Great Cause!

As the holiday draws closer, we’re all reminded of the traditions we grew up with, the memories of holidays past and of course, the big Thanksgiving Day meal we all gather for. However, for two Stapleton families and many like them, Thanksgiving doesn’t bring the same excitement.

Prader-Willi Syndrome is a complex genetic disorder that causes low-muscle tone, slowed metabolism and most notably, chronic feelings of insatiable hunger. The disorder is the leading genetic cause of life-threatening childhood obesity, and because of this, Thanksgiving can be a difficult holiday for those impacted.

Local residents Julie Foge and Rachael Fischer know this difficulty all too well after both having a child diagnosed with PWS and were determined to create a tradition on Thanksgiving that was about more than food. From there, the Harvesting Hope 5K turkey trot was born and continues to encourage families to celebrate the holiday in a fun, active way. This year’s course will take participants throughout Stapleton’s Central Park in a professionally-timed 5K fun run/walk with a kid’s fun run happening just before, FREE for children under 10.

Since it’s inaugural year, the race has grown to nearly 1,500 participants with expanding entertainment for everyone in the family.  There will be firemen passing out medals to all the kids who participate in the fun run as well as a DJ, balloon artists, face painters, free coffee, and even a silent auction to get holiday shopping started.  Most importantly, all proceeds from the race will go to help the Foundation for Prader-Willi Research.
