6 Tips for a Safe, Successful Winter Move

Written by Patrick Young

Are you planning a move to the Stapleton area this winter? If so, you’ll need some tips to keep your family safe and make your winter move go smoothly. Here’s what you need to know about moving during the colder months of the year.

Start Packing Boxes Early

Whether you will be moving in the spring, summer, fall, or winter, it’s always best to get a jumpstart on your packing. This allows you to take your time and keep your boxes completely organized. If you’re packing some boxes on your own, be sure to pick up some basic supplies such as bubble wrap, boxes, markers, and tape. Go room-by-room and label boxes clearly so you will know where they go when you get to the new house. Also, pack some “day of” bags or suitcases to keep in your car so you will have easy access to your essentials during your move.

Hire Movers to Make Things Easy

Moving during the winter in Colorado — or any other cooler parts of the country — can be kind of tricky. Winter storms can bring hazardous road conditions with little warning, and you may not be comfortable driving a big moving truck on slippery roads. To help keep you and your belongings safe, you may want to think about hiring a moving company. You can work with these professionals to ensure your stuff is packed securely, and moving pros will be more comfortable maneuvering bigger vehicles on winter roads.

Be Aware of Shorter Days

Winter moves can come with some perks. Moving services may be less busy than during more popular moving seasons, which could give you more wiggle room when it comes to scheduling your move. However, you also need to remember that there are fewer hours of daylight during the winter months. That leaves a narrower window to get your belongings into your home, especially if you will be doing some of the work on your own. Allot for the time difference and give yourself a day or two more to complete your move — or start your days earlier.

Don’t Leave Running Vehicles Unattended

Stapleton is very safe, but unfortunately, this area of Denver is no stranger to property crimes and theft. If you are moving during the colder months, you may be tempted to warm up your vehicle before getting in it. However, trying to stay comfortable during your move could result in your vehicle being stolen. Denver police warn residents to avoid warming up or “puffing” their vehicles, so keep this in mind when you make your move.

Make Sure Utilities Are Turned On

You may not like getting into a cold car, but you certainly do not want to walk into a freezing house. Before moving day, check with local utility companies and make sure your water, power, and gas are all turned on before you arrive. If you can, go to your new home ahead of time to turn on the heat and ensure all necessary utilities are running. Also, if you will be in and out of your home on moving day, think about switching your heat off to save energy costs.

Take Advantage of Seasonal Sales

Moving in winter has its perks, and one of those is that you may be able to outfit your home for a lot less than other times of the year. If you move around the holidays, stores are bound to be offering seasonal sales and discounts on appliances, electronics, and anything else you may need to furnish your home. Scan your local papers or look online for promotions that can help you save. Also, be sure to update your address with the post office so you can receive welcome offers from helpful home retailers like Bed, Bath, and Beyond.

If you are moving to Stapleton, welcome to the area! You are sure to enjoy living in this small corner of Denver. If you are moving anywhere else this winter, we wish you the best of luck as well and hope these tips make your move a lot easier.

  1. My favorite tip in this article was when you said that one should hire a moving company to help pack things securely and be able to deliver them safely on winter roads. Aside from them, my tip is to hire a couch disassembly and reassembly service. With their help, a person can get a couch out from a door that is smaller than the width or height of the sofa.
