1,500+ Participants Expected for Stapleton Turkey Trot

As the holidays draw closer, we’re all reminded of the traditions we grew up with, the memories of holidays past and of course, the big Thanksgiving Day meal we all gather for.  However, for two Stapleton families and many like them, Thanksgiving has a special – and slightly unique – meaning.

Local residents Julie Foge and Rachael Fischer have both had a child diagnosed with Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS).  Five years ago they decided to create a Thanksgiving tradition that was about more than food and that would help raise awareness for PWS.  If you’re not familiar, PWS is a complex genetic disorder that causes low-muscle tone, slowed metabolism and most notably, chronic feelings of insatiable hunger, with no known cure.  Julie and Rachael ultimately decided to found the Harvesting Hope Turkey Trot to encourage families to celebrate the holiday in a fun, active way and learn more about PWS.

Event Details:

The 5th Annual Stanley Harvesting Hope is a family friendly Turkey Trot featuring a professionally timed 5K and 10K with a FREE kids fun run.  The race takes place in Stapleton and will take runners and walkers through the beautiful paths surrounding Central Park, Sand Creek and Westerly Creek.

Participants receive a T-shirt, swag bag, professionally-timed results, free race photos, and a free adult beverage for those 21 and up.  All attendees are welcome to enjoy free entertainment, food, and coffee.  Dogs, strollers and wheelchairs are welcome.  All proceeds are donated to the Foundation for Prader-Willi Research to support the foundation’s work to eliminate PWS.

This year, in addition to its USATF certified 5K event and free kids fun run, Stanley Harvesting Hope will be introducing the Denver Metro area’s only 10K turkey trot, running along the scenic trails surrounding Stapleton’s Central Park, Sand Creek, and Westerly Creek.

It will also be the only turkey trot in the Denver Metro to offer a beer garden with all beer donated by Cheluna Brewing. All participants 21 & up will receive a beverage for free.

About PWS:

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a genetic disorder that occurs in approximately one out of every 15,000 births. PWS is recognized as the most common genetic cause of life-threatening childhood obesity. The common characteristics defined in the initial report included small hands and feet, abnormal growth and body composition (small stature, very low lean body mass, and early-onset childhood obesity), hypotonia (weak muscles) at birth, insatiable hunger, extreme obesity, and intellectual disability. PWS results from an abnormality of chromosome 15, and definitive diagnosis is now based on genetic testing.
