Tips for Transitioning from Summertime to Back-to-School from Friend Assembly
As the lazy days of summer come to a close, students and parents begin to face the annual challenge of shifting gears for the new school year. The transition from carefree summer activities to structured school routines can be daunting, but Sarah Schreiber, owner of Friend Assembly offers seamless tips and insight to help families smoothly navigate back-to-school season.
Tips for Transitioning from Summertime to Back-to-School
- Make back-to-school shopping fun. It doesn’t have to just be plain pencils and classroom boxes of Kleenex. A little glitter never hurts! Or maybe your kid is into Mindcraft or pugs doing yoga. Whatever it is, get your kids excited to show off a new water bottle or backpack. Use this time an opportunity to connect with your kiddo and catch up on their latest interests.
- Support Your Teachers! They work diligently to get those classrooms looking great and laminating all the things! Start the school year off by showing how excited you are to have your kiddo in their class – a handmade card, a little plant for the classroom, a $10 gift card for coffee. Little gestures go a long way.
- Start a new journal/sketchbook practice. The beginning of the school year is a great time to start a journal or sketchbook practice with kiddos. Keep it low pressure and start with a silly prompt for 10 minutes a night. Draw on sticky notes like this Lunch Note set that you can find in our studio and sneak your drawing into their lunchbox.
- Take time to unplug and connect. Go out for a family walk before/after dinner, find time to prep their favorite snacks (my 3-year-old loves a homemade popsicle), come to Friend Assembly and make a little clay project like a planter for your kids’ teacher or a pencil holder. Use this time to check in to see what your kiddo is excited about, nervous about, things from summer they are sad to say goodbye to, friends they are excited to reunite with, etc.
- Say goodbye to summer. Host a last hurrah like a campfire to reflect on summer fun or talk to them about their “ 2 stars of the summer and 1 wish” (2 things that made them happy and 1 thing they wished went differently).
Stop by Friend Assembly at Stanley Marketplace and say hello to Sarah and her team who are full of other fun ideas to enjoy the final stretch of summer as a family.
