5987 Chester Way is listed for $1,995,000 by Joe Phillips of Focus

One of the hottest issues in Denver real estate this week?

New property tax valuations have been mailed. This is good news, in a way. A lot of homes have appreciated quite a bit since the last assessment cycle, and this is reflected in many of the new valuations homeowners are seeing on their assessor’s notice.

This is also bad news, in a way. A higher tax valuation means your property taxes are on their way up.

So what should you do from here?

If you have questions or would like to better understand how property taxes are calculated, check out this Scoop post:

Yikes, my Denver property taxes are up how much!?! How to protest your home valuation

Though we can’t predict how this assessment cycle will go in terms of protests, here’s some historical data about how successful protests were in the past. According to this 2017 Denver 7 ABC article, the Denver assessor granted about 50 percent of all appeals.

Before we dive into more real estate fun, here a few Scoop posts you might want to check out.

How can you avoid the “summer slide?”

Rebecca Fawcett’s post on the Five Ways to Avoid the Summer Slide has some great information you might want to think about as we finally thaw out of the winter cold.

Here’s a great tip from Cristina Hartman at MindCraft Makerspace in Rebecca’s post about avoiding the “summer slide”:

Make your destination a project: If you have travel plans, have your kids do some research and create a diorama, a video, a podcast or a piece of art on something interesting about your destination. You can do this for any age and about any destination, including local outings, like the zoo or a road trip to a mountain town. These projects become a great family bonding and learning time.”

Last but not least, Joe Phillips has an interesting post about a Central Park couple that launched a new business that teaches at-home chefs how to become excellent backyard BBQ masters:
