56th is being widened from close to North End through Pena

One roadway project we’ve been watching here at the Scoop and Focus Real Estate? The widening of 56th Avenue from Peoria to Pena Boulevard.

If you live in Northfield, Montbello, Parkfield, Green Valley Ranch, or almost any other community north of I-70, you probably travel on 56th Ave quite a bit. And you’re not the only one – 56th Avenue sees nearly 24,000 vehicles on average each day.

As part of the 2017 Elevate Denver Bond Program, which is intended to make our streets safer and more efficient for everyone, Denver’s Department of Transportation & Infrastructure (DOTI) is making several improvements to help move more people, safely, whether they’re in a car, on a bike, on foot or taking transit.

Here are the changes to 56th Avenue DOTI is anticipating:

  • Widen the roadway from one to two travel lanes in each direction to ease vehicle congestion
  • Add a new concrete median to separate eastbound and westbound vehicle traffic and to carve out a safe place pedestrians can stop in the middle of the street, if needed, before continuing to cross
  • Install new traffic signals and pedestrian crossings
  • Build a new multi-use path along the north side of 56th Avenue for pedestrians and people on bikes, which will provide better connections to neighborhood bike lanes and to the trail system at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge
  • Improve drainage along 56th Avenue and Uvalda Street

The City of Denver is anticipating that construction could start in late 2021/early 2022 and could be complete by late 2023, according to DenverGov.org.

We’ll update everyone on the Scoop when we learn more!
