Designing a beautiful and functional outdoor space can transform your backyard into a personal sanctuary and add extra living space for much of the year. Whether starting from scratch or looking to upgrade your current setup, here are our top six tips (because why stop at just five!) to help you design a beautiful outdoor environment.

1. Consider Metal for Outdoor Furniture

When it comes to outdoor furniture, black metal is a top choice that we recommend to our clients for larger pieces, particularly for those seeking a low-maintenance option. Unlike wood, which can deteriorate over time, black metal is often more resilient to the elements without needing constant protective coverings. Its versatility is a bonus, seamlessly working with most design aesthetics, from modern to rustic.

Pro Tip: Mix and match your furnishings! While buying the coordinated furniture set is    tempting, a mix-and-match approach will give your outdoor space a more curated feel.

2. Add Tile Around your Firepit

A fire pit can be the centerpiece of your outdoor space, providing warmth on cool Colorado evenings and a gathering point for friends and family. To enhance its design, consider adding tiles around the base or the top edge. Tiles are available in various colors, patterns, and textures, allowing you to customize the look to match your overall design scheme. Just make sure they are heat-resistant and outdoor-rated, and only tile on surfaces that aren’t hot to the touch when the fire is on.

3. Incorporate Vintage and Terracotta Accents

Adding character to your outdoor space can be as simple as incorporating vintage and terracotta accents. Vintage items, such as lanterns, galvanized steel pots, or reclaimed wood pieces, can bring a sense of charm. Terracotta pots offer an earthy feel that blends beautifully with natural surroundings. These accents add personality and create a beautifully warm and inviting ambiance.

Pro Tip: Vintage and antique shops are great, but don’t underestimate your local Arc Thrift store! It can be a treasure trove of unique outdoor pieces, and the prices are unbeatable.

4. Create Zones with Outdoor Rugs and Cushions

Use outdoor rugs and cushions to create cozy seating areas to make your outdoor space as inviting as your indoor rooms. Outdoor rugs define spaces and add a layer of comfort, while cushions provide softness and style. Choose weather-resistant fabrics and match colors and patterns to reflect your personal taste. Have fun with it!

5. Install a Pergola for Shade and Interest

Pergolas are a fantastic addition to any outdoor area. They provide much-needed shade during the hot summer months, define different areas within your deck or patio, and add an element of privacy (a bonus when you’re near your neighbors like we are in Central Park!). Pergolas also add architectural interest, creating a focal point with climbing plants (Clematis is our favorite), string lights, or outdoor curtains.

6. Don’t Underestimate Good Lighting

String lights, lanterns, and path lights can transform your outdoor environment after sunset. There are so many excellent solar-powered options on the market now. Focus on creating layers of light for both functionality and ambiance. Use brighter lights in cooking and dining areas and softer, more diffuse lighting for your lounge areas.

By incorporating these design tips, you can create an outdoor space that is not only beautiful but also functional and long-lasting. Whether hosting a summer barbecue or enjoying a quiet evening by the fire pit, a well-designed outdoor area can add so much enjoyment to your home environment.
