Do you have a sump pump alarm that will alert you if water starts to come out of your sump pit and flood your basement? This could happen if your sump pump stops working!
Even though the majority of our massive rain storm has passed I think it still makes sense to put a sump pump alarm in to protect your basement. My guess is most homes that were going to flood have flooded at this point but I think more homes may have water in their basements soon because sump pumps have got to be exhausted! My sump pump has been going off every 3 minutes during this massive rain storm so it’s likely worn out and I fear it could give out. So I’m finally putting in the sump pump alarm that has been on my “To Do” list for at least two months now!
Below is an overview of a few of the various sump pump alarm options that exist. Since almost all homes in Stapleton have a sump pump almost all of you could likely benefit from one of these sump pump alarms. I read that flooding basements is the second biggest source of insurance claims in the country! I have to give credit here to my neighbor Tim who was nice enough to do this research below for our block on Stapleton.
Sump Pump Alarm Options:
- Option 1: Basement Watchdog Battery-Operated Water Alarm. $9.97 and in stock at Home Depot. Highest rated water alarm for <$30. Seems to work well. Audio alarm. Battery power can be good (works even when power is out) or bad (if battery dies) depending on how you look at it.
- Option 2: Honeywell WaterDefense Water Leak Detection System. $22.49 with free shipping to Stapleton. Home Depot. Highest rated water alarm <$30 that gets plugged in. Audio alarm.
- Option 3: PitBox Cellular Pump, Water, and Power Alarm. $189 + $30/year after the first year. The gold standard. Monitors two locations including sump pit for water and also monitors for power outages and sends you a text if issues arise.
My plan is to put in the battery powered Home Depot one (Option 1) today and then order Option 2 and put that one in as well. That way I have a battery powered and a hard wired option in place. Total cost is about $35 and we plan to finish our basement so that $35 is protecting thousands of dollars of carpet, baseboard, drywall etc…makes sense to me.
Hope this helps you stay dry!
