Have no clue what you’re doing on your home improvement projects but wish you did? If you answered yes (or your spouse would quickly answer yes for you) you may want to think about joining the DIY Club. (Relax, it’s free and there is no sales pitch)
I’ve been in real estate brokerage long enough to meet a whole lot of people that wanted to get better at home improvement but didn’t know how to get started. The problem seems to be that we like to think and daydream about getting more handy (HGTV is great for that!) but we don’t know how to take the first step and take action.
I’m as guilty as you are. For years I’ve been telling myself that I’m not handy, which is currently true, but now I’m finally willing to make an effort to get better at it through practice. No one comes out of the womb knowing how to install hardwood floors…you have to learn it! The truth is most of us have jobs where we don’t ever do any creative or physical work so naturally we feel inadequate in those areas.
I’m starting the DIY Club to come together with other people in the community who want to learn about home improvement. We’re gonna get to work “doing”, not just meeting to talk about doing. I don’t about you but I have to do to learn, I can’ t just watch.
Here is how I think it could work but this will evolve as we come together as a group:
I think we could come together and help each other on home improvement projects we need done in our own homes while being led by a professional contractor. That way it’s not the blind leading the blind; we’d be well-prepared on work day, have direction on the job and we won’t screw up each other’s houses. We could take turns on whose projects we work on and basically be giving each other a hand for free, somewhat amish style. (I learned everything I know about the amish from the movie “The Witness” with Harrison Ford and Danny Glover so don’t hold me to it if this isn’t exactly amish. Great movie though.)
We could also use this group to benefit a few other groups besides ourselves. We could use it to teach our kids about working with their hands and we could from time to time take on a project for someone outside the group who needs a hand such as an elderly person. Just some ideas.
