Want To Give Back This Season? 5 Tangible Ways To Help

Knowing this can be a tough time of year for many people, we want to express gratitude by paying back in our community. If you’re feeling the same, check out these initiatives to help those who need it this time of year—most have opportunities to volunteer, and of course, donating whatever money you can makes a big impact.

Several of the ways to help below could involve your kids (if you have kids), which would be a great way to show them what the holidays are all about. I really believe in the “more is caught than taught” philosophy with kids, which means they’re going to learn a lot more through watching your actions than hearing you lecture on something. Could any of the ways to help below be something you do with them this season?

Food Bank of the Rockies

The largest hunger-relief organization in the Rockies always distributes food to those in need. Right now, every single dollar you give provides food for six meals for people who need them! You can also volunteer in person, with kids as young as 10 able to volunteer with an adult.

Denver Rescue Mission

This Christian organization works to end homelessness and support people struggling with addiction. Donations go to provide emergency meals and shelter to those in need.

Food For Thought Denver

Food For Thought is dedicated to making sure at-risk children in target schools don’t suffer from nutritional insecurity that can impact their cognitive, social, and emotional development. They’re looking for volunteers to pack bags of food on Fridays that go home with kids on the weekend; you can of course also donate money.

Colorado Pet Pantry

The organization distributes pet food through regular food banks to ensure human food goes to humans and pets get the nutrition they need, ultimately keeping pets with the families who love them. They can always use volunteers to staff the pantries and distribute the pet food, among other opportunities, as well as to donate pet food or money.

Greater Park Hill Community

In addition to their Thanksgiving giveaway for in-need families, the organization runs no-cost food programs and pantries. Here are ways to donate.

And if your family needs help this year, check out the above organizations as well this resource page from Denver Public Schools.
