As moms and caregivers running our own businesses, saying “no” to a paying customer can feel especially unnatural when we’re juggling multiple responsibilities.
At the beginning of the year, I chose one word I wanted to represent my approach to business for 2025.
The word I chose is “Permission.”
Specifically, I am giving myself permission to say no. I’m a mom, a wife, a stepmom, a business owner, a mentor, a daughter in the sandwich generation (yikes!)—there is no shortage of competing priorities.
But, guess what? As the owner of YOUR own business, YOU get to surround yourself with those whose values align with yours—just like you carefully choose who cares for your little ones! How does this ignite your power for long-term success?
Build Real Relationships
When your values align, customers are more likely to feel connected and invested, leading to longer, more meaningful partnerships (and referrals!). Plus, these understanding clients respect your family boundaries and scheduling needs.
Maximize Your Energy
Between school pickups, family commitments, and business demands, your time is precious. Saying no allows you to focus your limited hours on clients who truly benefit from what you offer, bringing out your best work.
Reinforce Brand Integrity
Consistently working with aligned clients helps build a reputation for quality and integrity. These clients understand and value that you’re building a business while raising a family—and they’ll attract more ideal customers just like them.
When you’re selective, you create space for clients who value what you do, believe in your mission, and respect your dual roles as both business owner and caregiver. The result? A thriving business built on mutual respect and shared goals that supports the life you want to create for your family.
