It may not feel like it now, but Fall is right around the corner, and with the new season comes thoughts of sweater weather and everything pumpkin spice. So, we wanted to share some tips for updating your closet for fall from Shana Colbin, owner of True boutique at Stanley Marketplace. Shana’s tips, below, can be used to apply to what you already have in your closet as well as a few key pieces to take you through the change in seasons.
1. Color makes the outfit
I always like to encourage people to embrace color and fall is a wonderful time to do just that. Jewel tones in a statement piece, dress, handbag or shoe can help highlight your true personality. Even brights can play a role in your fall wardrobe, especially paired with black or other neutral tones like charcoal or navy!
2. Suits are NOT just for the office
A well fitted suit can be a fun addition to any fall wardrobe. No need to take it to the office–she looks good out to lunch or happy hour, a shopping trip or girl’s night out with a fun strapless top underneath. Something fun and different to add to your fall collection!
3. Cropped sweaters, high waisted and wide leg pant to pair it with
This is one of my favorite looks for fall. Highlight those legs with a fun cropped sweater and a high waisted, long wide-leg pant–this is also a fun look to bring in color and play with different fabrics depending on the weather. Pair with a high boot and you are good to go!
4. Make a statement with your outerwear
One of the best ways to spruce up your look is to have a striking coat, jacket or vest. It could stand out in the fit, fabric and/or color. Something that screams you, your personality–almost like a signature item that identifies you from a mile away.
5. Dark denim does the trick
This fall, invest in some darker washed denim. The dark color spruces up the look, warms the outfit and is flattering to the figure. All kinds of fits work–you don’t need to listen to the trends, wear what works for YOU.
6. Everyone needs a versatile, transitional dress
Nothing beats a dress that can go into fall. Warming up a dress you already have for cooler weather might mean pairing it with a big, comfy sweater and high boots and tights. Then on warmer days, you can cool it back down with booties or sandals.
7. Add spice to your ‘leisure wear’
You never know who you’ll bump into at the grocery store. Even leisure wear can be spruced up with fun details like bright colors, shoulder pads, unique pleating and cuffs at the wrist. Some can even go day to night. Look good AND feel good at the same time.
8. Accessories are Key
An accessory can ALWAYS make an outfit and your fall wardrobe is no exception. Try a wool wide brimmed hat, a statement necklace or a silk scarf. It’s a great way to make a statement, bring in a pop of color and show off your personality!
