We invite Stapleton residents to discover a hidden benefit to living in the neighborhood, our 14 mile Sand Creek Greenway trail. The trail runs east-west through the north metro area, from Aurora’s soccer fields through Stapleton and west through Commerce City until it meets the S. Platte trail near York Street. It is a popular route for walkers, runners, bicyclists and families wanting an outing in a green space.
We go by a hashtag on social media, #WildernessInTheCity, because we’re a great place to get out and enjoy the outdoors. Along our trail we have two nature centers, Star K Ranch/Morrison Nature Center in Aurora and Bluff Lake Nature Center in Denver; and even in the more industrial areas of the Greenway, we’ve seen deer, coyote, owls, beaver, muskrat, water birds and song birds.
We’re reaching out to the community and working to get folks involved through our volunteer workdays and citizen scientist efforts, by participating in the Walk2Connect walks we sponsor, as well as our other programming. Next year, look for the start of enhancements to the trail, including at the end of 2019, a new Greenway map we’ll distribute in the community free of charge. You can find a current map here.
