What Makes a Mother? A Film Project Celebrating Mothers.

A couple of months ago I posted about a film project I was working on at my library with Trish Tolentino, owner of Stories Not Forgotten, I was primarily seeking moms with their adult children to participate in interviews for a film project about motherhood. In March and April we set up four dates and we interviewed 18 families.

The mothers and children were overwhelmingly honest and I felt like Barbara Walters as I asked them about their lives. There was laughter and there were tears. For me, the experience was bittersweet. One year ago on April 24th, my mother passed away after a 16 month battle with pancreatic cancer. My son was only 8 months old and as you can imagine our family was heartbroken.

My grief was the impetus for the creation of What Makes a Mother? When I saw some of the videos from Stories Not Forgotten,  I wished so badly that I had video of my mom to show my son. I wanted to give mothers and their children the gift of having high quality footage for preserving their memories. I thought it would be a lovely keepsake for them and an interesting and creative library program. At times during the interviews I too, became emotional as I thought of my mother and how there were so many questions I wish I would have asked her…What never crossed my mind was that our little film project has the possibility to be more impactful than I ever dreamed.

Through the course of our interviews we met Barbara Hoffman and her daughter Marlow. As we were interviewing them, we learned that Barbara suffers from kidney disease and is in search of a living kidney donor. We wanted to try and help the family spread the word in the hopes that some kind soul out there would consider donating a kidney, which would be the most wonderful Mother’s Day gift.

Our short film is now complete and we will be screening it on the Tuesday after Mother’s Day(May 16, 2017) at 6PM  at the Ross-Cherry Creek Branch of the Denver Public Library located in at 305 Milwaukee St. Denver CO 80238. Bring your mother if you are lucky enough to have her close by, watch the film and then take her out to dinner. Bring the mother of your children, watch the film and then take her out to dinner! Bring yourself, the child of a mother, watch the film and then take yourself out to dinner!

Thank you for posting this! What Makes a Mother? is an amazing project. We’re honored to be part of it. And, we can’t thank you enough for spreading the word about needing a living kidney donor for Barbara Hoffman (one of her daughters actually lives in Stapleton with her family)! Want to learn more about kidney donation but you’re not on Facebook? Call Living Donor Coordinator Kathryn O’Dea at PSL to ask any questions (it can be completely anonymous): 720.754.2164.
