SUN Board Members Launch Sustainable Neighborhood Program in Stapleton

Earth Day was this past Sunday, April 22 and the newly formed Stapleton Sustainable Neighborhood Program organized two cleanup events for both Sand Creek and Westerly Creek. Volunteers braved the elements and collected trash along the banks of both rivers and planted seeds and trees! After making their way south along Westerly Creek, the cleanup crew celebrated at Stanley Marketplace for dinner and drinks.

SUN board members Geoff Horsfall and Mark Mehringer co-chair the Sustainability Committee and helped launch the City of Denver’s Sustainable Neighborhood Program in Stapleton with the goal of “encouraging direct citizen action in enhancing neighborhood sustainability and reducing their environmental footprint.” Stapleton was accepted into the Sustainable Neighborhoods Program in late 2017 and was officially launched on February 28th, 2018.

The program is credit-based. Participating neighborhoods, totaling 14 in Denver and 8 in Lakewood, earn credits for participation and for achieving specific goals. Stapleton can receive designation as a “Participating Sustainable Neighborhood” or an “Outstanding Sustainable Neighborhood” depending on the number of credits earned in a given year,.

Goal Areas

The program gives Stapletonians the opportunity to become active partners in making the neighborhood an even more vibrant, sustainable, and attractive place to call home. There are five goal areas around which events, projects, and workshops will be focused:  air, water, land, energy and people.

Benefits will vary depending on the initiatives selected by the Stapleton Sustainable Neighborhood Committee members, which can include increasing home energy efficiency, water savings in lawn and common area irrigation, or organizing neighborhood food drives. Participation will enhance Stapleton’s social, ecological, and economic strength.

Neighborhoods participating in the program earn credits from the city/county based on participation and project accomplishments. The credits work like a point system and depending on the number of credits earned in a given year, neighborhoods may receive designation as a “Participating Sustainable Neighborhood” or an “Outstanding Sustainable Neighborhood” from the city/county. Neighborhoods earning “outstanding” designation will receive recognition from elected officials and will receive custom neighborhood signage.
