Intermittent Fasting: Friend or Fad?

How about a proven and effective strategy to prevent holiday weight gain!

7-10 pounds?

That is how much weight the average person gains between October and January.

7-10 pounds! YIKES!

For some it’s a slow slide from Halloween to New Years, for others it’s a free fall starting with the first pop of a single candy corn.

Would you like to be proactive this year?

Whether it’s a few pounds of “bloat” or the full 10, I’d love to give you a strategy to avoid it all together this holiday season while still actually enjoying yourself and your favorite indulgences this season brings. Perhaps your new year’s resolution this year won’t have to do with losing weight for once! (Because you didn’t gain!)

Introducing Intermittent Fasting

Intermittent Fasting (IF) is a safe, proven method to not only lose weight (and stubborn weight at that!) but also give yourself a little bit of food freedom during times, such as the holidays, that you would like to have it, without packing on that holiday weight.

Another Fad?

If you haven’t heard of IF, one of the first things you should know is that it has been around for thousands of years and has been used in a number of cultures and religions for spiritual and health benefits.

And for the skeptics in the crowd, know that IF has been studied and found to aid in heart health (like lowering blood pressure and improving cholesterol levels), improve insulin sensitivity, protect against obesity and diabetes, and increase human growth hormone level.

So what exactly is IF?

While there are many different versions of IF, allowing you to find one that is right for you, your lifestyle and your goals, it is simply shortening the window of time that you are eating during the day.

This doesn’t mean that you can eat pie all day and reap all the benefits I listed. You must still be mindful of eating well. But with fewer meals to worry about, many people find that eating healthier becomes easier and less stressful.

Hunger, Digestion & Blood Sugar

Additionally, eating less often allows you to be more aware of when you are actually hungry and therefore understand what your body wants and needs. When you eat all day long with little breaks in between, you begin to lose that sense of when you are actually hungry.

And it’s not just your mind that is affected. Eating from when you rise to when you go to bed means your insulin levels (which are a direct response to blood sugar levels) never have a chance to level out. When insulin levels remain high, your body remains in “storing” mode, during which our body stores energy as fat that is hard to break down.

The idea of IF is to take our natural fast during sleep and extend it, thereby shortening the window of time that we eat, minimizing the fat storing mode and optimizing the fat burning mode.

Who is IF for?

For anyone who is looking to lose weight, curb cravings, optimize their digestion, balance their blood sugar, simplify their life or just try something new, IF can be very safe and effective! Not to mention a great tool to still enjoy your favorite holiday indulgences without packing on the lbs this season.

IF is not for everyone. If you are under 18, pregnant, breastfeeding, underweight, or have a history of disordered eating, this would not be a good plan. Please reach out to me for individualized counseling before diving in!

Won’t I Starve?

You won’t starve participating in IF. There may be times when you feel hungry, but hunger is not dangerous or even bad for you. And many people find that the more they take part in IF, the easier it is. Too many of us have gotten into the nasty habit of eating, whether or not we are hungry, eating because we are bored or because the clock says a certain time.

Listening to our bodies and their actual needs, allowing them to rest in between meals, these are ways that treating ourselves kindly and with intention can support weight loss, blood sugar balance and greater health benefits.

So How Do I Start?
